First stay when I arrived in South Africa was in the welgekozen country lodge near the village Piet Retief. About 4 hours drive from Johannesburg national airport.
After a long flight this is an excellent place to relax. The owners are very friendly and just across the street is a supermarket, ATM and a Spurr so you can buy some supplies for the next days.
Next day I drove to Mkuze National park and stayed there for two nights in a safari tent.
There are no fences around the campsite, so every animal can pay a visit. I saw hyena's, vervet monkey's, bush baby and impala right next to the tent!
